For men, as well as some women, finding the perfect perfume can be a stressful, time-consuming experience. . If you familiarize yourself with the six basic fragrance groups, you will not only save time, but also make your shopping experience more enjoyable. The following paragraphs will discuss the six common fragrance groups when it comes to perfume in order to assist you in finding the right perfume with more ease.

The floral category is the largest and most popular scent for perfumes. These scents are made mainly from different varieties of flowers. These varieties include roses, orange blossoms, vanilla and jasmine. Other flowers are also used, including different varieties of lilies and orchids.

The oriental category of perfume scents represents a relatively large group of scents, as well. These scents include heavy mixtures of spices, balsams, resins, and amber helping to suggest a warm, exotic sensation. This category is very popular during wintertime, and colder months of the year because of its heavy, musky traits.

The citrus category of perfume scents are derived from different fruits. These fruits can include lime, lemon tangerine and mandarin

This often creates a tangy aroma women find refreshing, as well as uplifting. This category of perfume scent is most popular during warm months.

This category of perfume scents was given its name by the French. It tends to create a strong feeling and are made from many different wood-moss mixes. These are often earthly aromas, such as oak moss, bergamot and other types of wood and wood moss

Perfumes falling in the Chypre category of sent are most generally strong, earthly scents.

Although it can be hard to describe the scent of a color, this is a real category of perfume scents. Perfumes falling into this category of scents tend to be sharp, outdoor scents. This includes the scents of pine, juniper, leaves and herbs

Lavender and cocoa are also examples of green scents.

The Fougere category of perfume scents is most common among men. These aromas are usually created from herbs and mossy ferns. Perfumes that fall into this category normally come together in a very sophisticated style. While men typically where scents that fall into this category, there are popular perfumes for women that fall into this category as well.

Most every fragrance retailer will make you think their perfume is a totally new scent, all scents are likely to fall into one of these six categories.

Perfume fragrances were classified by Charles Piesse who was a perfumer from the 19th century. Charles had actually tried to classify each type of fragrance to a musical chord. Unsurprisingly his system failed but the terminology stuck on. The current perfume fragrance pyramid was invented by William Poucher in the 1920’s. The fragrance pyramid is based on the instability of the perfume ingredients or how fast the fragrance fades away

The fragrance of a perfume is described as top note at the point when it just gives you a whiff and then passes on. The heart notes then follow where the fragrance actually has a chemical reaction with your skin; and finally are the base notes where the true essence of the fragrance is revealed when the highest molecular weight from the ingredients begin to surface.

There different categories of scents to describe perfumes meant for women and perfumes meant for men. Under the women’s category, we have the most common scent, which is floral. This is in fact the largest category and the primary ingredients are from flowers like rose, jasmine, carnation, violet and orange blossom. Some of the perfumes that come under this category are Paris and White Diamonds. Some of the sub categories for floral fragrances are like floral green (Bvlgari, Chanel 19); floral fruity (Baby Doll, Amarige) and floral woody (L’Eau D’Issey, Romance)

The next category is oriental. This means the scent is made to create warm, exotic impression because of its ingredients like balsams, spices, resins and musk. Perfumes that fall under this category are Royal Secret, Contradiction and Shalimar. Some of the sub categories of oriental are oriental spicy (Opium); oriental citrusy (Candies); floriental (Hugo Woman, Wings) and oriental gourmand (Angel, Casmir and Wish)

The other categories of perfumes are chypre, citrus, fougere and green. Chypre was first described by Francois Coty to describe the aromas from the island of Cyprus. This fragrance is generally sweet, soft and earthy with ingredients like oakmoss, patchouli, bergamot and citruses. Some of the well-known perfumes under this category are Paloma Picasso, Fendi and Femme. Citrus fragrances have citrus fruits like tangerine, lime, mandarin and lemon in them. These are very common in men’s fragrances. Examples of citrus scented perfumes are CK One and Jess. Fougere is French for fern, which relates to freshness and is best described in Cool Water. Green fragrances are from green plant parts like grass, pine and herbs. Safari and Bvlgari Extreme best describe this scent.

Now that we are familiar with the fragrances, what about the concentration? We frequently hear about edt and edp.

Actually, perfumes are the combination of fragrant oils that have been mixed in high-grade alcohol where 15 – 25% is oil and 90 – 95% is pure alcohol. This concentration is known as parfum. When the percentage of oil is lower then it is know as eau (water)

The strength of the eau can vary depending on the percentage of the pure perfume oil that is contained. EDC (Eau de cologne) has the least concentration with just 2 - 5% of perfume oil mixed in water and alcohol. EDT (Eau de toilette) has a bigger concentration of 4 – 10% of perfumed oil. EDP (Eau de parfum) has 8 – 15% perfumed oil and the most highly concentrated of all fragrances is Parfum or perfume, which has 15 – 25% of perfumed oil.

Ever thought about how many perfumes are there on the shelf that is from celebrities like Paris Hilton and David Beckham. When is the latest celebrity perfume range coming up next? Have you checked out the latest Pour Femme, a 145 scent that claims that it is a harmonious blend of essences like tea and rose jasmine?

In celebrity perfumes, the rage is always for the most expensive one in the line. The old is the latest fashion around. In the middle of a sudden increase of new fragrances that are getting all the time more luxurious and classy to roll out, and harder to move ahead of the crowd. Some perfume companies are looking to store up earnings and diminish risk by re introducing old fragrances. The celebrity scents are promoted to appeal to a fresh age bracket of perfume-users. The most up-to-date products in the field of celebrity perfumes and fragrances involve big perfume campaigns and, in some cases, more well known displays in area stores. The marketplace is highly demanding for celebrity perfumes right now and experts believe that there will be an ever increasing, energy within this existing brand.

The perfume industry slipped down in the year 2001 and was continuously falling till the end of 2004 until a whole new range was launched in the celebrity section in U.S. which was highly appreciated for its new style and smell. Last year, more than 120 new perfumes were started at all department stores in U.S., which was more than twice the number in the year 2000. Many of the celebrity perfumes are introduced by fashion designers, celebrities, and even car companies.

Many celebrities have used the occasion of the launch of perfumes for cashing their own reputations. There are many to name like Britney Spears who has made use of her provocative figure to promote her range of scents, Curious and Fantasy. Curious was Britney’s first perfume to be launched and since it was promoted by a star, needless to say that it made a huge success.

In the lines of Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson too appears to be cashing in on her name as a beloved honey with her new products like the Dessert Treats beauty line. This consists of fragrances that smell similar to sugary treats. Her two perfumes are Candy and Cupcake and it appears that all of them are edible and taste just like their names.

However, you must be aware that while purchasing these costly perfumes you are not duped by the smell and the brands. Make sure that you are perfectly comfortable with what ever you choose

By Roberto SedyciasThe importance of perfume has been realized a very long time ago. Its birth can be dated back to the early Egyptians era when it was being used for religious ceremonies and love making preparations. Nowadays, perfumes have virtually become a bare essential in our society and they are being used in all walks of life. The use of perfumes adds zing to the occasions as they are considered to be one of the most luxurious and sensuous accessories in the modern society.

When it comes to the use of perfume as an essential part of body accessories, they are numerous brands available in the market that one can choose from. However, the choice of a particular brand largely depends on the social stratum of a person. These days, the use of designers` fragrance is a rage in the market and everyone wants to use a specific brand of fragrance which is not only well-known but also stands out in terms of smell.

Some facts about perfumes:

Generally, the fragrance of perfumes last longer for people who have an oily skin. This is because their oily skin has more natural moisture content that holds the fragrance. On the other hand, dry skin has less natural moisture content and, hence it fails to hold the fragrance for a longer period of time.

Admired perfumes for men range from citrus, spicy, woodsy, leathery and while they are designed in a controlled environment, the same for the women are designed for primal senses with the combination of subtleness and refinement. Perfumes for women can be found in different wonderful themes such as floral like roses, jasmine, fruity like citrus or orange blossoms, oriental like mix of spices, amber and so on.

Perfumes are worn by both men and women to display their individual personality. However, what smells wonderful on your friend might not suit your body temperament. Hence, while buying a designer perfume, bear the following dos and don`ts in mind:

How to try

When you want to try new fragrance for its chemical reaction, try it on your body and not on an object, say on the perfume bottle cap or a piece of cardboard. If you experience any irritation on your skin, take it for granted that the chemical components of the fragrance are not suitable for your skin tone and texture and its use could be harmful for you.

No two-timing, please

Buyers are often found to be trying different perfume fragrances at the same time. Do not use three or four fragrances at a time as it affects your sensory reflections leading to confusion relating to the choice of a particular fragrance. So, the chances are you will fail to pick that perfect perfume which would be suitable for your skin tone.

Say NO to fake & cheap

Do not go for fake and cheap designer perfume fragrances merely for the sake of saving a few pennies. What seems like a saving could cost you dearly in the long-run. Fake and cheap fragrances can be extremely detrimental to your skin tone and texture as they are not made up of quality and standard components of fragrance. The best way to choose the perfect perfume is sniff coffee beans to clear and refresh your smelling power.

Samples

Always try to use sample perfume bottles if it is possible for you to get one. They are extremely ideal for you to understand the ultimate effect on your body. Incase you find them suitable or otherwise, you are in a situation to make a choice accordingly.

Designer perfume outlet

The best way and place to buy a perfume is to drop at a designer perfume outlet where you can pick your favorite designer perfumes. It helps you to take the right decision as you have a wide-range of choices to pick from. Besides, perfumes purchased from a designer perfume outlet tend to live up to your expectation. They could cost you a bit more, but you can feel the difference as you impress people with the unique smell. This is when you feel that your spending is worth it.

When we buy perfume, we are more concerned about the brand, price tag and of course the scent itself instead of finding out how and what it is made of. It is not surprising that there are many of us who are actually ignorant on how the perfume is made. Perfumes are generated by two methods. One method is from natural resources and the other is by synthetic production. Natural method is by utilizing natural resources like plants and animals.

Even before perfumes were commercially produced or even got its terminology, scents were being extracted by plant sources for decades. In fact, plants have been used to make essential oils that were added into water for baths and even made into lotions and scented candles. Today, plants play a major role in the perfume industry, as they are the primary source of aroma compounds and essential oils in perfumery.

Every part of a plant is essential for perfume production. The compounds that are extracted from different parts of the same plant can produce remarkably different fragrances for example; the aerial section and seeds of the coriander have different odors while the leaves, fruit zest and blossoms of the orange plant are responsible for the production of petit grain, orange oils and neroli in that order.

The most significant contributor of scent from a plant is undoubtedly the flowers and blossoms. Flowers of roses, osmanthus, tuberose, jasmine and mimosa as well as blossoms of ylang-ylang trees and citrus are all widely used to produce high concentration of essential oils. Leaves and twigs of rosemary, lavender, violets and citrus are well known for producing ‘green’ smells that are incorporated into perfumes. Other parts of the plant that are also equally important in the production of perfumes are the fruits, bark, seeds, roots, resins, bulbs, lichens and rhizomes.

Apart from plants, you might be surprised to know that animal sources are also used in perfumery. People who have not been aware of this fact may think twice before purchasing a perfume that was made out of animal sources. This is because, much to the dismay of animal rights organization and animal lovers alike, certain animals have been hunted specifically for perfumery. Animals that fall into this category are musk, which is obtained from the musk sacs of the Asian musk deer – this practice has been replaced by synthetic musk for ethical reasons. Civet or civet musk from the aromatic sacs of civets (related to the mongoose family); castoreum from the North American beaver; ambergris from the sperm whale and honeycombs obtained from honeycomb of the honeybee.

Perfumes produced from plants were not a cause for concern unlike the ones derived from animals. However, there is an alternative for perfume production that is from synthesized sources. Synthetic aromatics are obtained from organic synthesis of a variety of chemical compounds. The chemical compounds for synthetic perfumery are pine resins, petroleum distillates or a cheaper organic feedstock. The beauty about synthetic fragrances is that it is not found in nature. You can never smell it anywhere else. Synthetic perfume is also the answer to the long awaited solution for diminishing natural resources that are currently being used for perfumery.

Very few companies actually produce synthetic perfumes. Some of the renowned ones are Givaudan, Takasago, International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), Symrise and Firmenich

The idea of seasonal fragrances is completely foreign to most perfume and cologne wearers. Most people approach the topic as you wear what you like when you want to wear it. However there are more seasonal fragrances to help your body chemistry match the perfume note more accurately. While not applicable to absolutely every individual with every fragrance, there are a few basic standards to guide you.

Winter is a time for the more spicy colognes for men and the more oriental fragrances for women. Musky, wooded scents or an outdoor of type aroma do well in the winter as well. In winter, the metabolism slows a bit and the science of fragrance (yes there is a science) dictates that the combination of our bodies’ chemistries combined with our smell association are more inclined to prefer some scents in the winter time versus other scents in warmer weather.

Apple or distinct fruity scents are typically a woman’s spring and early summer scent while she may want to pick something less sweet when the weather turns hot. This is partially due to over active sweat glands in the summer time and our naturally desire to smell “cooler” scents when it is hot outside. For men, summertime scents involve more of an outdoor leathery scent. Spicy scents tend to mix poorly with sweat and create an unpleasant aroma.

Some perfumes and colognes do well all year long. The more subtle the fragrance is, the more it will mesh well with both summer and winter body chemistries. The fruitier scents that are blended with other aromas are good for spring while some of the floral blends are really more appropriate for winter.

There is no exact perfect match for everybody when trying to determine which perfumes and colognes are more suited for each individual season. Often you can tell what types of perfumes are more popular by the types of samples are on the fragrance counter, but each body is unique and each blend is unique to the wearer. The previous text is considered a basic guideline based on averages. Some things may not apply to your body and your perfume selection.

If you are in doubt remember that subtlety is always the best policy. Subtlety allows for a greater margin of error whether you are talking seasonal selections or trying a new fragrance for the first time. Overpowering perfumes and colognes make the small mistakes we make in the selection process stand out.

With so many eye-catching commercial advertisements of the newer and newer designer fragrances flashing up on the television screens and the fashion magazines everyday, it is really turning out to be a matter of utmost confusion to select the apt fragrance. This tends to make the selection of the right perfumes tougher for the general mass.

There may arise a wide range of confusions while shopping for the perfumes. The media enticing the general flock regarding the new names and the new fragrances in the market is perhaps one of the most significant points of dilemma that have often lead to wrong selection of fragrances and perfumes. The world market of perfumes is highly competitive with large numbers of buyers and innumerable manufacturers and sellers. It is, hence, important for the manufacturers or the designers to create new formulae and present before the world. Such continual creations of newer and newer names and fragrances by the thousands of designers bewilder the minds of zillions of end users and the story ends up with wrong selection.

The next pivotal point of confusion in this regard is the different types of fragrances. With the lack of knowledge regarding the few basic categories and the families of the fragrances you are bound to turn out to be an utter flop while purchasing a perfume for yourself. Any renowned dealer or perfume specialty store usually comes up with a wide assortment of perfumes from varied brands, all with ecstatic smells. This may ultimately lead to the mere wastage of time with wrong selection of perfume.

Price range is another very significant issue that creates awfully great range of confusion. When it comes to the price ranges for the designer fragrances, it often seems that the perfume designers hardly think about the price control policies while formulating and coding the prices. It is due to the high rates of some of the renowned brands that the cheaper perfume designers have started to crop up hither and thither. This again runs a long way to confuse the millions of innocent consumers.

Personal preferences for brands are another very significant issue that cause a great deal of confusion while planning to purchase perfumes. In any case, if a particular brand remains out of the market then it may put you to the zone of total confusion. Different brands develop different base notes that are unique. If the ecstatic Henri d’Orleans remains out of the market for some time, the huge aficionados of the brand would find it to be tough to pick an apt fragrance out from the wide assortment of Badgley Mischka or Sonia Rykiel.

It is worth meaningful and really a wondrous idea to select a fragrance that would complement the aura of your personality. This is the primary formula to select and pick the right bottle of perfume. The salient thing that has to be kept in the forefront of the mind is that the selected perfume must never mark a dominating effect on your personality. Whether it is the “Exuberant” or “Dunhill Desire Blue” or “ Ralph Lauren’s Polo Sport” it should suit your persona to the fullest extent.

The selection of fragrances varies greatly according to the places you go. If you are planning to go to a cocktail and dance party with so many guests, it is advisable that you must chose such perfumes that allows to create a cloud of vapor of some hard fragrance. A couple of whiffs of Dior’s Dunes are great for such situations, while it may prove to be worst while setting out for a formal business meeting. In case of the formal meetings and offices little bit of sophistication with soft fragrance would add special meaning to your personality.

Hence while shopping for the perfumes it is significant that you should better know as to what purpose you are actually going to choose the perfume for. Your pick should be different if you are planning to purchase the perfume to be used while attending a wedding party than that while attending an interview or an official meeting. Remember that in each of the two different situations you are going to present yourself with two distinctive personalities – although the character may be the same.

Choices for him

Amongst the awe-inspiringly huge assortment of perfumes – for both oriental and occidental brands of male perfumes, some of the worth mentioning names have been admired to be the excellent choices. The names that have the charismatic effects and sell like the hot cakes are the Curious, Dior’s Dunes, Desire, Glow, Obsession, and some more like these.

On the other level, the sharp yet soft oriental woody scent of the Angels, Roger & Gallet would mark your fashion and style of stepping into the threshold of the conference hall or the director’s chamber.

Choices for her

Reputable designers have always been looking for scopes to satisfy the ever-lasting demand of the exotic fragrances for the world’s fashionable women section. While the “Burberry Weekend”, “Carolina Herrera” and “Chacherel’s Amor” for women have been widely admired by the office goers, the names like “Bvlgari Green Tea”, “Estee Lauder’s Pleasures”, “Loves Baby “– the floral elegance and etc. are excellent choices for party lovers.

Since both the perfumes and colognes trigger our sense of smell with almost equal skills, the huge section of the general flock tend to consider the two distinctive concepts synonymously, which lead them to wrong selection. People often tend to pick up the colognes instead of the perfumes and make mistakes in this regard time and again. In order to get rid of the possibilities of such mistakes, it is important to understand the basic points of differences between the perfumes and the colognes.

As a matter of fact, the alcohol water base ratio is the pivotal point of distinction between the two. Perfumes have high concentration of essential perfume oils, while the colognes tend to have a high concentration of alcohol. Naturally, as compared to the colognes, the fragrances in case of perfumes usually retain for comparatively longer span of time. Moreover the fragrances of the perfumes tend to be more prominent and more effective as compared to those of the colognes.

Perfumes And Features

While dealing with the discussion regarding the right selection of perfumes it would be great to have a glance on France – being the industry of perfumes. Although invented by the Egyptians, the French had carried out extensive research works on the perfumes and developed the concept of layered fragrance. This has today become the salient point to distinguish an original perfume from rest of the perfumery items such as colognes, eau de toilettes, eau de perfumes and lotions. An original perfume usually has three distinctive layered fragrance called notes – the top notes, middle notes and the base notes.

Colognes And Features

Colognes, on the other hand, are entirely different stream of the subject. These are usually the single-note fragrances with much feeble effectiveness and less prominence as compared to the perfumes. Colognes never come with the property of layered fragrances. Since the colognes are comparatively milder, they can be over-sprayed to make the bolder whisper of note.

Other categories

The subject does not come to an end with just these two categories. Eau de toilettes and eau de perfumes are also there, making the issue father critical. Since eau de toilettes contain less percentage of perfume oils, they prove to be quite milder. The most aesthetic category is eau de perfumes. These prove to be much cheaper than the original perfumes but the retains the fragrance almost as long as the perfumes do.

Hence it is advisable to spend as much time as possible while shopping for the perfumes and fragrances. Making too much haste will be a fool’s errand on your part. Shopping for perfumes requires the attention to be paid on your pocket as well as on these categories.
